  • Biography

    Nghi Nguyen, M.D., Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Radiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of its Nuclear Medicine Division. His clinical interests include advanced imaging for cancer diagnosis and treatment response evaluation, assessment of neurodegenerative disease and brain tumors, radioiodine ablation for benign and malignant thyroid diseases, and radioactive treatment of neuroendocrine tumors.

    Dr. Nguyen received his doctoral degree from the University of Tübingen in Germany, where he also received his medical degree. He stayed on for an internal medicine internship and nuclear medicine residency training. He then completed his nuclear medicine residency training at St. Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, where he remained to receive advanced training through a fellowship program in positron-emission tomography (PET).

    After completing his fellowship training, Dr. Nguyen joined the faculty at St. Louis University as an Assistant Professor of Radiology. He then completed a one-year radiology research fellowship at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

    Dr. Nguyen joined the Radiology faculty at the University of Pittsburgh in 2014, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2019. Prior to joining the UT Southwestern faculty in 2021, he served as Director of Pediatric Nuclear Medicine at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

    He is board certified by the American Board of Nuclear Medicine.

    Dr. Nguyen's research interests include oncological and neurological PET/CT and PET/MRI, clinical evaluation of digital PET imaging (direct photon counting technology), enhanced visualization of fused PET/CT and SPECT/CT images using a multipurpose CT window, the effect of gadolinium contrast (dimeglumine gadobenate) on brain MRI signal intensity and FDG metabolism, and artificial intelligence for real-time monitoring of nuclear medicine data acquisition and analysis. His investigations have resulted in more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and numerous invited lectures and seminars.

    He currently serves as a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Biomedical Graphics and Computing, and the Source Journal of Medical and Clinical Imaging, in addition to more than 10 years as a review editor for International Frontiers in Cancer Imaging and Diagnosis.

    Dr. Nguyen is a member of the Radiological Society of North America and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, which he has served at the national and local level.
