Joy Chen, M.D.

Joy Lo Chen, MD, FASA, FCCM is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She is a board-certified anesthesiologist and intensivist whose clinical practice focuses on perioperative care and surgical critical care. She provides anesthesiology care at Parkland Memorial Hospital and has served as Medical Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and Co-Medical Director of the Thoracic Intensive Care Unit at the Dallas VA Medical Center for the past seven years.

Dr. Chen's academic interests include anesthesia for patients with obesity, trauma anesthesia, ICU liberation, physician leadership, and organizational behavior. Her scholarship explores the intersection of clinical excellence, physician leadership, and organizational culture, with a particular focus on how teamwork and workplace dynamics influence both patient care and the healthcare workforce. She is an active educator and invited national speaker on topics including perioperative care for patients with obesity, quality improvement, physician development, imposter syndrome, and workplace behavior in healthcare.

Dr. Chen is actively involved in the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists (SOCCA), and Texas Society of Anesthesiologists (TSA), where she serves in national and state leadership roles. She is committed to advancing patient care through education, mentorship, collaborative scholarship, and the development of future leaders in anesthesiology and critical care. She received the UT Southwestern Department of Anesthesiology Junior Faculty of the Year Award in 2020 and is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
