Sergio Huerta, M.D. Professor School Medical School Department Surgery Biography Sergio Huerta M.D., F.A.C.S. obtained an A.A. in biology from West Los Angeles College, he earned a B.S. also in biology from the University of California, Los Angeles. He continued on as a medical student at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA School, earning his M.D. with thesis on June 15, 1998. During medical school, he co-wrote a review text for the United States Medical Licensure Exam Step II (Classical Presentations and a rapid review for the USMLE II, J&S publications 1999) and a review book for medical students on surgery (the Pocket Review of Surgery, J&S publications 2000). He completed his surgical residency at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center. After completing two years of surgical training, he embarked on a two year hiatus to engage in research in the fields of clinical nutrition and nutritional oncology. During this period, he wrote and published numerous articles in the fields of surgery, oncology and nutrition. He was clerkship director at UTSW from 2011 to 2015. He teaches medical students and residents. He was the inaugural chairman of an annual scientific forum for residents interested in research, which he chaired from 2000-2005. Dr. Huerta completed his residency in general surgery at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center in June 2005. He is currently a Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the editorial board of multiple medical journals.
