Ank Nijhawan, M.D.

Ank Nijhawan, M.D., M.P.H., is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and a member of its Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine. She specializes in HIV care, both in the outpatient setting and at the Dallas County jail.

Originally from The Netherlands, Dr. Nijhawan holds a bachelor's degree in romance languages from Princeton University. She earned her medical degree at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where she also completed internal medicine residency training. She received advanced training through a combined infectious diseases fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She then pursued a clinical research fellowship at Brown University Miriam Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. She also holds a master's degree in public health from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in infectious diseases, Dr. Nijhawan joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2012.

Dr. Nijhawan conducts clinical research in the area of HIV and sexually transmitted infections, with a focus on epidemiology and health services. She brings to UT Southwestern a unique combination of HIV clinical expertise and clinical research in vulnerable populations, particularly in correctional facilities. She has delivered a number of invited lectures, received significant grant support for her research, and published numerous academic articles related to HIV, correctional health, and health disparities.

She is a member of the Academic Consortium on Criminal Justice Health, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the National Institutes of Health’s Center for AIDS Research working group on Justice, Substance Use, HIV/AIDS Involved Populations. Additionally, she serves on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Denver Prevention and Training Center Advisory Committee and on the editorial advisory board of The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

Personal Note

Dr. Nijhawan’s interests outside the hospital include her two children, soccer, running, and camping.
