Biography

Neil Fernandes, M.D., is an Associate Professor of Radiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and Associate Director of its Pediatric Radiology Division. His clinical interests include pediatric interventional radiology and pediatric musculoskeletal radiology.

More than just knowledge, it is the compassionate application of that knowledge that made UTSW the obvious choice for my training. I feel fortunate to be able to participate in the development of the next generation of physicians.

Originally from San Francisco, Dr. Fernandes went east to Ithica, New York, to obtain his bachelor's degree in Biology & Society from Cornell University. He received his medical degree from UT Southwestern, where he also completed his radiology residency training. He then received advanced training through a fellowship pediatric radiology at Children's Health in Dallas.

Committee Service

At UT Southwestern, his commitment to radiology training is demonstrated by his participation in the Pediatric Radiology Fellowship program, particularly as a member of the Applicant Admissions and Program Evaluation committees. At the medical school, he serves as an admissions interviewer and a student ambassador. He is also a member/mentor of the Pediatric Radiology Clinical Competency Committee.

At Children's Health, Dr. Fernandes represents the Radiology Department on an array of clinical committees responsible for setting guidelines for the prevention and management of Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (executive steering committee), Skin and Soft Tissue Infection (leader of the Imaging Subgroup), and Musculoskeletal Infection. He is also the primary radiologist member of the weekly Children's Liver Transplant Selection Committee conference.

Dr. Fernandes is a member of multiple national and international professional societies, including the Radiological Society of North America, Society for Pediatric Interventional Radiology, Society for Pediatric Radiology, Texas Radiological Society, and the American College of Radiology, which he serves as a pediatric panel member for the Radiology Assessment and Review Program, a national-level online educational program.

Dr. Fernandes' research interests include inferior vena cava filter placement in children,  the use of ultrasound in evaluating spleen size in patients with sickle cell disease, and the use of MR-guided High Intensity Focused Ultrasound in pediatric cancers.
