Ravi Sarode, MD, is a Professor of Pathology (Tenure Track) and Internal Medicine (Hematology/Oncology), the Chief of Pathology, and the Medical Director of Clinical Laboratory Services at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He is also the Medical Director of the Division of Transfusion Medicine and Hemostasis. He holds the John H. Childers, MD, Professorship in Pathology.
He went to MGM Medical College in Indore, India for his medical degree. He did his Pathology and Hematology training at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India where he was assistant professor of Hematology. He came to the Blood Center of Wisconsin in Milwaukee for the Transfusion Medicine Fellowship.
Dr. Sarode has been actively involved in translational and clinical research (Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia, Therapeutic Apheresis in general and, red cell exchange in sickle cell anemia in particular, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, platelet function disorders, reducing the misuse of blood products in clinical practice, Prothrombin Complex Concentrates, rebalanced hemostasis in cirrhosis). He has participated as a principal investigator for more than 12 clinical research studies including comparing Beriplex (KCentra) with plasma for warfarin reversal as an international principal investigator.
He has published more than 170 journal articles, 13 book chapters, and numerous scientific abstracts. He is the Co-Editor-in-Chief of “Transfusion and Apheresis Science”, and he is also on the editorial board of Transfusion Medicine Reviews. He has been a reviewer for journals including Blood, The Lancet, Journal of Thrombosis and Hemostasis, JAMA, NEJM, Transfusion, British Journal of Hematology and many others. He is the past president of the American Society for Apheresis (ASFA).
He is the recipient of several awards including ASFA Presidential Award, Outstanding Physician Award at University Hospitals of Cleveland and the Vernie A. Stembridge Resident Teaching Award. He was a member of the Advisory Committee on Blood/Tissue Safety and Availability” advising the Secretary of Department of Health and Human Services of the United States. His current clinical research is focused on "Rebalanced Hemostasis in Cirrhosis and Restrictive Transfusions."
