  • Biography

    John Giacona, Ph.D., PA-C, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Clinical Research at UT Southwestern Medical Center, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine. He is a board-certified Physician Associate and certified Hypertension Specialist who practices in the Clinical Heart and Vascular Center as a member of the Hypertension Section in the Division of Cardiology.

    Dr. Giacona earned his Bachelor of Science and Arts in Biology from The University of Texas at Austin and completed both his Master of Physician Assistant Studies and Doctor of Philosophy degrees at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

    His research focuses on the role of nutrition, exercise, and cardiometabolic risk factors in blood pressure regulation, skeletal muscle mitochondrial function, and cardiovascular health. His work also examines the links among hypertension, metabolic dysfunction, cerebrovascular disease, and cognitive decline. He is funded by the North Texas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at UT Southwestern to investigate mechanisms connecting hypertension and metabolic dysfunction with cerebrovascular outcomes.

    In addition to his clinical and research activities, Dr. Giacona contributes to medical education through the Departments of Healthcare Sciences and Physician Assistant Studies, where he leads the cardiovascular and endocrinology clinical medicine curriculum sections.

    Dr. Giacona serves as President-Elect of the Academy of Physician Associates in Cardiology and Chair of its Preventive Cardiology Committee. He also serves as Director of Clinical Research for the Primary Aldosteronism Foundation. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Physician Associates, the American College of Cardiology, and the Texas Academy of Physician Assistants. In addition, he serves on the American Heart Association’s Hypertension Professional/Public Education & Publications Committee for the Council on Hypertension.
