Dr. Amer Shakil, M.D., M.B.A., is a highly accomplished physician. He has 25 years of experience in health care education, administration, clinical training, and research. He is Professor of Family Medicine and holds Dr. Bill Ross Professorship in Family Practice. 

Dr. Shakil has previously served as Family Medicine Residency Program Director and Interim Chair for the department. He also served as President for UT Southwestern Faculty Senate.

 

Dr. Shakil served as Chair and President of Board of Directors of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP). Currently he serves on TAFP Foundation Board.  

 

Dr. Shakil is founder of a faith-based community free clinic in Richardson, TX, where he has been providing care for underserved and uninsured patients for last 20 years. In addition, he helped establish over 10 such clinics in DFW Metroplex its surrounding areas.

 

Dr. Shakil earned his medical degree from Rawalpindi Medical University. He completed a fellowship in Teaching and Research from University of Illinois (UIC). He is Fellow of American Academy of Family Physicians. He also completed a Program Director Fellowship from National Institute of Program Director Development (NIPDD) and Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD). He also has a Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Organization Leadership from the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD).

 

Dr. Shakil’s Research is focused on family violence screening and prevention. He has worked on development and testing of a shorter but equally effective clinical screening tools called HITSS. This tool is used for detecting family violence in primary care settings. His work has been recognized internationally. In 2019, pediatric version of HITSS tool received Pearl Award by North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG). Pearl award is granted to top research studies that impact clinical practice. Dr. Shakil’s research was also recognized as Honorable Nomination by Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM).
