Tanya Gustafson, D.V.M., Ph.D.

Tanya Gustafson, D.V.M., Ph.D., is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in medical oncology in the Department’s Veterinary Research and Oncology Clinic.

Dr. Gustafson earned her bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and followed with completion of both her veterinary degree and Ph.D. at Texas A&M University. She continued her training at the Animal Medical Center in New York through a general internship and an oncology internship at Animal Cancer Care Clinic in Fort Lauderdale. She completed her residency training at both Michigan State University and Colorado State University, where she became board certified in oncology. 

Following her studies, Dr. Gustafson returned to South Florida to begin her oncology practice. She worked at several veterinary clinics as a medical oncologist, including Animal Cancer Care Clinic, where she served as Director of the Internship Program and Director of Clinical Trials. She brings her experience in clinical practice, research, and clinical studies to her role at UT Southwestern’s Veterinary Research and Oncology Clinic. She specializes in combination protocols with chemotherapy and novel therapeutics.  

Dr. Gustafson’s interests include the treatment of feline lymphoma and transitional cell carcinoma. Previous studies involved outcomes of cats receiving various chemotherapy treatments for gastric lymphoma and the role of Hedgehog gene signaling in cell proliferation and survival in canine bladder cancer. She is also interested in mechanisms to reverse chemotherapy drug resistance in lymphoma and combinations of chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
