  • Biography

    Tiago K. Colicchio, PhD, MBA, PMP, FAMIA, is Associate Professor in the Department of Health Economics and Systems Policy at the Peter O’Donnell Jr. School of Public Health. He is a biomedical informatician whose work focuses on the design, implementation, evaluation, and optimization of health information technology, with particular emphasis on electronic health records (EHRs), clinical decision support, and learning health systems. Dr. Colicchio earned his PhD in Biomedical Informatics from the University of Utah and previously served on the faculty of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he held appointments in Biomedical Informatics and Data Science and the Center for Clinical and Translational Science.

    Dr. Colicchio’s research seeks to improve the safety, effectiveness, and usability of EHRs by leveraging clinical data, knowledge representation, implementation science, and artificial intelligence. His work has advanced understanding of how health information technology affects clinical workflows and patient outcomes, how clinician reasoning can be better represented within EHRs, and how clinical decision support systems can be redesigned to reduce alert burden while delivering more relevant information to clinicians. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading biomedical informatics journals, served as co-editor of the International Medical Informatics Association Clinical Decision Support Yearbook, and is a Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association (FAMIA). 

    Before entering academia, Dr. Colicchio spent a decade leading large-scale informatics projects in the industry, managing enterprise EHR implementations, clinical systems operations, and health IT governance programs. This combination of operational leadership and academic research informs his translational approach to informatics, bridging the gap between technological innovation and real-world healthcare delivery.
