  • Biography

Uriel Sandkovsky, M.D., M.S., is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of its Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine.

Dr. Sandkovsky received his medical education at Maimonides University in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He completed internal medicine residency training at Mount Sinai Morningside (formerly St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center) in New York, followed by a fellowship in infectious diseases at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York.

Prior to joining the UT Southwestern faculty in 2025, Dr. Sandkovsky served on the faculty at Texas A&M University and at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where he was Medical Director for the Comparitive Medicine and Select Agent Program and an attending physician on the solid organ transplant infectious disease service.

Dr. Sandkovsky's research spans several interconnected domains within infectious diseases and transplant medicine. His work in solid organ transplantation includes studies on cytomegalovirus (CMV) resistance and the impact of hypogammaglobulinemia on post-transplant infections. In the area of HIV/AIDS clinical care and treatment, he has focused on coordinated services and early intervention in the Ryan D. White Part D and Title III grants programs. He also has explored innovative educational strategies for HIV care through a flipped classroom model and investigated antiretroviral pharmacokinetics, specifically Raltegravir concentrations. His research in neurocognitive complications of HIV (NeuroAIDS) includes participation in studies using magnetoencephalography (MEG) to identify neurophysiological markers of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders and aging. Additionally, he has addressed sexually transmitted infections in HIV-positive populations, particularly the prevalence of gonorrhea and chlamydia in men who have sex with men. His basic science research has explored the antimicrobial mechanisms of nitric oxide against gram-negative bacteria. These projects collectively reflect a comprehensive approach to infectious disease research, integrating clinical, translational, and public health perspectives.

Dr. Sandkovsky has also participated in a range of clinical trials, reflecting his expertise in HIV treatment, COVID-19 therapeutics, and infectious disease prevention. In the area of HIV research, he was involved in several pivotal Phase III trials evaluating antiretroviral therapies that contributed to the development of modern HIV treatment standards.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Sandkovsky played a key role in multiple studies, including observational work on SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in healthcare workers and NIH-sponsored interventional studies evaluating investigational COVID-19 therapeutics.

His work also extends to vaccine and antiviral development beyond COVID-19. He participated in a Phase 3 trial of a vaccine for RSV in older adults, and in the investigation of a novel antibody-based pre-exposure prophylaxis. Most recently, he served as principal investigator for a randomized controlled trial evaluating a treatment of human mpox.

Dr. Sandkovsky is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American College of Physicians, in both of which he is a Fellow.
