Deborah Jebakumar, M.D., joined The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center as Assisistant Professor in August 2025. She has completed her medical school training and internship at Christian Medical College, Vellore, India (2000 to 2006). The subsequent two years were spent serving in a Christian Mission Hospital providing low cost-effective care in a resource limited remote town in India.

She then returned to her alma mater to possibly pursue a career in anesthesiology/interventional radiology when an unexpected meeting with a mentor reeled her in a totally unexpected direction by creating a spot as a non-postgraduate registrar in the department of transfusion medicine and immunohematology. Working in the blood bank and on peripheral smears/bone marrow biopsies opened her eyes to the captivating world of pathology.

The next three (2009-2012) were spent completing her rigorous training in Anatomic/Clinical pathology at Christian Medical College, India including research and writing a dissertation on Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma immunophenotypic subtypes. She then immigrated to The United States of America and completed her pathology residency (2016-2020) at Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH), Temple, Texas followed by her cytopathology fellowship (2020-2021). She continued on at BSWH to serve as faculty for the next three wonderful years with a deep focus on medical school, resident and nephrology fellow teaching. Her research during the years at BSWH was focused mostly on triple negative breast cancer and tumor microenvironments in different ethnic groups.

Renal pathology was her “missed beat” due in part to immigration struggles. Having completed her long-awaited renal pathology fellowship at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in mid 2025, she has now joined UTSW to serve as part of the renal pathology and cytopathology teams.
