Anna C Rivara, PhD, MPH is an Assistant Professor in the Peter O' Donnell School of Public Health. Dr. Rivara completed an undergraduate degree in Anthropology at the University of Oregon, a Master of Arts degree in African Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and an MPH (Infection Control) and PhD in Applied Anthropology at the University of South Florida. She then went on to complete a Global Health Equity Scholars post-doctoral fellowship at the Yale School of Public Health (funded by NIH Fogarty International Center and NIDDK) and continued as a post-doctoral associate and Associate Research Scientist at the Yale School of Public Health. Her post-doctoral work primarily focused on identifying type 2 diabetes risk factors among adults in the Independent State of Samoa.

Currently, Dr. Rivara is funded through a NIH NIDDK Mentored Research Scientist Career Development Award (K01) and is assessing changes in diabetes care preferences (captured via Discrete Choice Experiments), glycemia, and illness experiences among adult Samoans living with diabetes. Dr. Rivara is also working to start a research program in the DFW area focused on assessing risk, increasing awareness, and improving outcomes for diabetes-related comorbidities (including Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease – MASLD), among underserved populations, and understudied demographics.
