Biography Aitua Salami, M.D., M.P.H., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in minimally invasive thoracic surgery and thoracic surgical oncology. Dr. Salami earned his medical degree at the University of Benin School of Medicine in Nigeria. He completed his general surgery residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, where he was honored with the Louis B. Schatz Memorial Award for excellence in research. He received advanced training in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, where he received the Coleman Connolly Award for excellence in teaching. In addition, Dr. Salami earned a master’s degree in public health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Certified by the American Board of Surgery, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2024. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the International Society for the Study of Lung Cancer, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Association for Academic Surgery, and the Society of Black Academic Surgeons. Dr. Salami’s clinical focus is on minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery. He specializes in treating benign and malignant diseases of the lungs, pleura, esophagus, trachea, mediastinum, chest wall, and diaphragm. He has delivered numerous presentations and published peer-reviewed articles in academic journals related to his areas of expertise. Dr. Salami has been recognized with the Thoracic Surgical Robotics Fellowship by the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the Robotic Thoracic Surgery Equity and Access Award by the Thoracic Surgery Foundation.
