Dr. Henry Luan joined Peter O’Donnell Jr. School of Public Health as an Assistant Professor in Epidemiology in June 2024. Prior to joining the faculty at UT Southwestern, Dr. Luan was an Assistant Professor (promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in May 2024) in Spatial Data Science and Spatial Epidemiology at University of Oregon, 2018-2024.

As a spatial epidemiologist and spatial data scientist, Dr. Luan investigates two major questions. First, how do health phenomena vary over space, time, and race/ethnicity? Second, what environmental factors (social, physical, and built) contribute to these spatial, temporal, and racial/ethnic variations? He uses Bayesian spatiotemporal statistics and Geographical Information Science (GIS) to answer these questions. The goal of Dr. Luan's research is to advance Bayesian probabilistic inferences in spatial health data analysis, promote the application of GIS and spatial analysis in public health, inform the development of geographically tailored, evidence-based health intervention programs, and ultimately improve population health.

Dr. Luan's work focuses on modifiable factors including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) providers and the food environment. His recently funded R01 project leverages extensive social determinants data and spatial data science to help reduce HIV incidence in the United States
