  • Biography

    Rafael Cires-Drouet, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of its Division of Vascular Medicine. His clinical interests include pulmonary embolism and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, chronic venus disease, and anticoagulation management.

    Dr. Cires-Drouet earned his medical degree at the Universidad Guayaquil in Ecuador. He received internal medicine residency training at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and completed advanced training in vascular medicine through a fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio.

    Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Vascular Medicine, Dr. Cires-Drouet joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2024. He previously served as Medical Director of the Wound and Healing Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center's Midtown campus and Medical Director of the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team at the Downtown campus.

    Dr. Cires-Drouet has published numerous peer-reviewed investigations in scientific journals, contributed to book chapters, and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for Vascular Medicine Journal, BMC Cardiovascular Disorders, BMC Pulmonary Medicine, and Thrombosis Journal. In addition, he is active in several professional societies, including the American College of Physicians, the American Heart Association, and the Society for Vascular Medicine.

    Dr. Cires-Drouet serves as principal investigator and receives funding from the National Institute on Aging and the National Institutes of Health. In addition to the National Institutes of Health, he has served as principal investigator for industry-funded research and co-investigator on Veterans Affairs, primarily in heart failure, venous diseases, venous thromboembolism, and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.

    In his free time, Dr. Cires-Drouet enjoys cooking, swimming, spending time with family, and working on DIY projects.
