Biography Abhishek Makkar, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in neonatal-perinatal medicine. Dr. Makkar has served on the faculty at the University of Oklahoma and held leadership positions at Oklahoma Children's Hospital at OU Health and Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton, Oklahoma. He also practiced at Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in India. Dr. Makkar serves as Medical Director of the Neonatal ECMO Program, Director of Neonatal Outreach, and Director of the Neonatal Telemedicine Program at UT Southwestern. His research interests focus on neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), telemedicine, neonatal outreach, implementation science, and expanded access to specialized neonatal care. Dr. Makkar joined the faculty of UT Southwestern in 2023. He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in India, followed by residency training in general pediatrics at Penn State Health and a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Makkar has long been and continues to be an instructor mentor in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program. He has earned several honors, including the Young Faculty Research Award from the Southern Society for Pediatric Research, and the Research Mentor Award from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Dr. Makkar has been actively involved in neonatal education throughout his career and developed the Neonatal Insights educational series and the annual Neonatal ECMO Certification Course at UT Southwestern. These programs provide evidence-based education and hands-on training for physicians and advanced practice providers, helping prepare clinicians to deliver high-quality neonatal and ECMO care. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, led multicenter collaborative research, and contributed to national consensus guidelines and education initiatives. Dr. Makkar is active in multiple professional societies, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Southern Society for Pediatrics Research, Supporting Pediatric Research on Outcomes and Utilization of Telehealth, the American Telemedicine Association, and the Children’s Hospitals Neonatal Consortium.
