Beckman, M.D., M.P.H., is a Professor of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and Division Chief of Vascular Medicine. He specializes in vascular and cardiovascular medicine. Originally from New York, Dr. Beckman holds a bachelor’s degree in American political history from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine, and completed internal medicine residency training at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where he also served as Chief Resident. He then received advanced training through fellowship programs in cardiovascular medicine and vascular medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He also has a master’s degree in epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in cardiovascular disease, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2022. Previously, Dr. Beckman served as a Professor of Medicine and Section Director for Vascular Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He also served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, where he was promoted to Associate Professor after six years. Dr. Beckman is actively involved in several professional organizations, including the Society for Vascular Medicine, American Heart Association (AHA), American College of Cardiology, and the Association of University Cardiologists (ACC), which he serves as an elected member. Dr. Beckman is Chair of the AHA/ACC Joint Committee on Guidelines. Dr. Beckman’s clinical and translational research focuses on the mechanisms that cause vascular dysfunction, susceptibility to atherosclerosis, and functional limitations in peripheral artery disease, translating discoveries made at the lab bench to human beings. His research has received funding from federal, foundation, and industry sources, and he is a co-inventor of a pending patent. Dr. Beckman’s work has been published in numerous medical journals. Dr. Beckman is an associate editor of Circulation, and editor of the textbook Vascular Medicine: A Companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease. Dr. Beckman is a well-known educator, having won the Eugene Braunwald teaching award at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the W. Procter Harvey Young Teacher Award from the American College of Cardiology. Personal Note Dr. Beckman’s interests outside of medicine include spending time with family, biking, traveling and photography.
