Biography Download Curriculum Vitae Dr. Danielle Callaway is a native of Texas who grew up in San Antonio and attended the University of Texas at Dallas for her bachelor's degree. She then received her M.D., Ph.D. at University of Texas Health San Antonio where she became enamored with redox biology and neonatal physiology. For Pediatrics Residency, she attended Baylor College of Medicine and participated in the Pediatrician Scientist Training Program there, working alongside Dr. Bhagavatula Moorthy for her residency research project where she studied the effects of hyperoxia on cytochrome P4501A genes in a mouse lacking Nrf2. Fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine uprooted her to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where she also did her postdoctoral studies in the laboratory of Dr. Edward Morrisey, a driving force for high impact studies in lung development and regeneration. As a part of her work in Dr. Morrisey's lab, Dr. Callaway sought to further describe the importance of the type 1 pulmonary epithelial (AT1) cell to neonatal life beyond the role of a simple unit for gas exchange. This work has formed the basis for the founding of her independent laboratory and resulted in a K08 Award from the NIH. As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, her lab focuses on the effects of mechanical force on AT1 cells both prenatally and postnatally to drive changes in gene transcription, extracellular matrix remodeling, and intercellular communication across the developing lung. To accomplish this, the lab will utilize specialized transgenic and surgical mouse models, cutting-edge imaging techniques, and next-gen sequencing all with the goal of making life better for babies.
