Andrew Z. Wang, M.D., Professor (Tenure), holds the A. Kenneth Pye Professorship in Cancer Research and is the Vice Chair for Translational Research and Commercialization in the Department of Radiation Oncology.
Dr. Wang earned two Bachelor of Science degrees in Biochemistry and Biology and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from Indiana University with highest distinction. He obtained his medical degree from the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology (HST) program at Harvard Medical School. After an internship in internal medicine at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in New York, he completed clinical training in radiation oncology in the Harvard Radiation Oncology Program. During residency, he also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Massachusetts Institutes of Technology under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Langer. Following residency, Dr. Wang joined the faculty of University of North Carolina as Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology in 2009, where he rose to the rank of Tenured Professor. Dr. Wang joined UTSW faculty in 08/2021.
Dr. Wang’s research program is focused on the application of biomedical engineering to cancer research. His group aims to develop novel cancer diagnostics and therapeutics to improve cancer treatment. His work is high impact and highly innovative and has resulted in 38 patents/patent applications and three biotechnology startup companies. His work has been published in high impact journals such as Nature Nanotechnology, Advanced Materials, and Nature Biomedical Engineering. Because of his research accomplishments, Dr. Wang has been elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), and the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI).
Clinically, Dr. Wang specializes in the treatment of genitourinary and gastrointestinal cancers. He is familiar with different radiation techniques, including IMRT, IGRT, linac-based SRS, SBRT, and intraoperative radiotherapy and interstitial brachytherapy.
