  • Biography

    Thomas G. Cotter, M.D., M.S.C.P., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases. He specializes in general hepatology and transplant hepatology, with interests in all liver diseases including alcohol-associated liver disease and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. In addition, he performs regular screening and diagnostic endoscopies and colonoscopies.

    Originally from Ireland, Dr. Cotter holds a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from University College Cork, which he received with honors. He earned his medical degree with First Class Honors from the National University of Ireland in Galway. He then completed an internal medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, followed by advanced training in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology through fellowships at the University of Chicago Medical Center. He also holds a master's degree in public health sciences from the University of Chicago.

    Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both internal medicine and gastroenterology, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2021.

    Dr. Cotter's research is primarily outcomes-based and is focused on improving the care of patients with alcohol-associated liver disease and of liver transplant recipients. He is the author of numerous publications and case reports, and he has delivered many invited lectures. Additionally, he has contributed to several books, including Clinical Dilemmas in Viral Liver Disease. He is currently a steering committee member on a NIH grant (AlcHepNet) and has a career development award from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

    He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Gastroenterological Association.
