Biography
Dr. Alan Chiu is originally from the Philadelphia area where he went to undergraduate at Swarthmore College and medical school at Jefferson Medical College. He completed his residency in Baltimore, MD at the University of Maryland in Internal Medicine, and worked as an internist in San Diego, before completing his Palliative Medicine fellowship at University of California San Diego.
He went on to workwith the Sharp HealthCare system in the San Diego area as the Medical Director of Palliative Care atone of their campuses. Dr. Chiu brings that experience with him to the UT Southwestern community. He is passionate about training future physicians in effective communication skills, particularly in thesetting of serious and complicated illnesses, as well as understanding and addressing healthcare dis-parities present within the larger medical system.
He specializes in Internal Medicine and Palliative Care, with additional expertise in symptom management, communication techniques, prognostication, advance care planning, and navigating patients and families through difficult decision making.
Outside of work, Dr. Chiu will spend his time exploring nature with his family and traveling, as well as making home cooked meals for his friends and family.
