Originally from Zargaoza, Spain, Dr. Alvarez-Arguedas holds a bachelor's degree in biochemistry, master's degree, and doctorate in molecular and cellular biology, allĀ which he earned at the University of Zaragoza. He completed internal medicine residency training at UT Southwestern. Dr. Alvarez-Arguedas' research interests include the study of the role of a very rare and specialized cell called microfold cells in the development of mucosal immunity in the upper airway against different pathogens. His investigations have resulted in publications peer-reviewed journals, and scientific meeting contributions in different parts of the world. Dr. Alvarez-Arguedas is active in several professional societies, including the Spanish Society of Microbiology, the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS), and the American Society for Microbiology, which he serves as a mentor in the Future Leaders Mentorship Fellowship. Outside of the lab, Dr. Alvarez-Arguedas enjoys spending time with his family and friends during outdoor activities, cooking Spanish food, reading, and running (a lot).
