Biography Hendrikus “Dutch” Vanderveldt, M.D., M.B.A, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern, and a member of the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases. He specializes in pancreatobiliary disease, interventional endoscopy, and novel surgical techniques for early GI cancers. Originally from Washington, D.C., Dr. Vanderveldt holds a bachelor’s degree in honors history from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and an MBA from Virginia Polytechnic & State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. He received his medical degree from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee, and completed internal medicine residency training at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. He then obtained additional training through a fellowship in advanced endoscopy at SUNY (State University of New York) Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in gastroenterology, he joined the UT Southwestern Faculty in 2017. Previously, Dr. Vanderveldt served on the faculty of the University of Miami, SUNY Downstate, UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso. Dr. Vanderveldt also serves as Commander of the 931st AMDS (Medical Squadron) at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kansas. A flight surgeon and officer in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, he has been deployed twice, domestically and to Afghanistan. Dr. Vanderveldt’s research interests include endoscopy techniques and pancreatic disease. His investigations have resulted in numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and contributions to reviews, monographs, and book chapters. Additionally, he has presented his findings at scientific conferences throughout the U.S. and around the world. At UT Southwestern, Dr. Vanderveldt is involved in the monthly biliary didactic conference, and in evaluating advanced endoscopy fellows. Dr. Vanderveldt is active in several professional societies, including the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, where he is a fellow and a member of the GI Organizational Leadership Development Program.
