Biography

Waleed Elhelaly, Ph.D., is an Assistant Instructor of the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and a member of its Division of Cardiology.

Originally from Egypt, Dr. Elhelaly earned his medical degree at Ain Shams University in Cairo. He also holds a master’s degree in Histology and Biochemistry and earned his doctorate in histology and cytogenetics from Cairo University in Egypt. Dr. Elhelaly then traveled to conduct his postdoctoral research in the field of studying/enhancing cardiac regeneration under the mentorship of Sadek Hesham, M.D., Ph.D. at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Elhelaly’s research interests include driving adult mammalian cardiomyocytes' cell cycle-reentry through discovering novel transcriptional regulation pathways and exploring mammalian valve regenerative capacity. His investigations have resulted in 7 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, he has presented his findings at scientific conferences throughout the United States and around the world.

Dr. Elhelaly is active in several professional organizations, including The American Society of Echocardiography and the American Heart Association, where he serves as a reviewer on the regenerative study section.

Personal Note

During his free time, Dr. Elhelaly enjoys cooking, tennis, watching history documentaries, and spending time with his family.
