  • Biography

Roderick McColl, Ph.D., is Professor of Radiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and a member of its Medical Physics Division. He provides magnetic resonance physics services to the Meadows Imaging Center, the Rogers Imaging Center, Clements University Hospital, and the Outpatient Building.

Originally from Scotland, Dr. McColl received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Edinburgh. He then obtained a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington, before earning his doctoral degree in computer science from the University of Warwick in Coventry, England.

In 1984, Dr. McColl received a Fullbright Scholarship.

Dr. McColl joined the Radiology faculty in 1992 as an Assistant Professor, and advanced to Associate Professor in 2002. He became a full Professor in 2019. He is also a member of the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering and of the Graduate School of Radiological Sciences.

Dr. McColl's research interests include Multi-modality imaging workstation and software design; development of echo-planar image reconstruction and optimization; functional magnetic resonance imaging; diffusion tensor imaging techniques and applications; imaging informatics, including the advancement of novel image archiving, communication and management techniques; and medical image processing approaches appropriate to generalize across multiple imaging sub-specialities and modalities. These efforts led to several milestones including: The design and implementation of an echo-planar and fMRI reconstruction/analysis
platform which was used by several UT Southwestern investigators and graduate students for both extramurally funded and dissertation-level research; development of web-based research PACS systems which were used in several large-scale UT Southwestern, studies including the Dallas Heart Study, as the online image storage and communication mechanism; development of DTI data management and analysis techniques which led to use in the Gulf War Neuroimaging Project; and management of data pertaining to multi-organ function in the heart, great vessels, aorta and carotids.

His work has led him to author or co-author more than 65 original articles in peer-reviewed publications and two book chapters. He has also been invited to present his findings at mroe than 30 scientific meetings and conferences throughout the United States and around the world.

During the course of his career, Dr. McColl has received or been involved in extramural funded research from the Department of Defense, Veterans Affairs, and the National Institutes of Health. He has also served as a reviewer and/or chair for grant review committees including the American Heart Association, Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health and several other international organizations.

Dr. McColl is an active member of the American College of Radiology and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine.
