James Luby, M.D. Professor Emeritus School Medical School Department Internal Medicine Biography James P. Luby, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of its Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine. He specializes in general infectious diseases, clinical virology, atypical mycobacterial infections, hospital-acquired infections, histoplasmosis, and HIV. Dr. Luby earned his medical degree at Northwestern University. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Northwestern University and Parkland Memorial Hospital and received advanced training in infectious diseases through a fellowship at UT Southwestern. Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Luby was an officer in the Epidemic Intelligence Service of the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, stationed at the CDC, from 1964 through 1966. He joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 1967. Dr. Luby’s research interests focus on clinical virology, herpes viruses, arboviral infections (St. Louis encephalitis and West Nile virus), and the epidemiology of infectious diseases, particularly hospital-acquired infections. He is the author of many research articles, case reports, reviews, and editorials, and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for a range of academic journals. He is a member of the Dallas County Medical Society, the Texas Infectious Diseases Society, and the Texas Medical Association and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA). In 2016, UT Southwestern established a Professorship in Infectious Disease named for Dr. Luby.
