Joseph Vento, M.D. Assistant Professor School Medical School Department Internal Medicine Biography Joseph Vento, M.D., M.S., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern and a member of its Division of Hematology and Oncology. His clinical interests include the treatment of genitourinary malignancies and leveraging new technologies to improve cancer care for patients. His clinical activities are based at Simmons Cancer Center and Parkland Health, which he considers a privilege, because it grants him an opportunity to serve individuals and their loved ones at critical moments in their lives while simultaneously tackling large-scale initiatives to make cancer care better for more people. Originally from Austin, Dr. Vento holds a bachelor's degree in electrical and computer engineering from Rice University. He earned his medical degree and received internal medicine residency training at UT Southwestern, working an additional year as a hospitalist at Parkland Health, where he grew attached to Parkland and its patients during the initial waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. He received advanced training through a fellowship in medical oncology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he also completed a postdoctoral master's degree in biomedical informatics through a National Library of Medicine T15 grant. Dr. Vento's research interests include cancer informatics, genitourinary malignancies, and electronic health record databases. His findings have been published in peer-reviewed journals and he has spoken at conferences. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Medical Informatics Association. Dr. Vento's interests outside of medicine include spending time with his wife and twin sons, fitness activities such as tennis, and traveling. He also enjoys learning new languages and instruments.
