Biography Michael Bowen, M.D., M.P.H., M.S.C.S., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, the Department of Population and Data Sciences, and the Department of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of the Division of General Internal Medicine. Dr. Bowen earned his medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, where he also completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics. Following residency, he completed the VA National Quality Scholars Fellowship Program, receiving advanced training in outcomes and health services research and quality improvement. He also holds a master's degree in public health from Vanderbilt, a master's degree in clinical science from UT Southwestern, and a certificate in biomedical informatics from the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Biomedical Informatics at Houston. Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Bowen joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2012. Dr. Bowen is Co-director of the General Internal Medicine Fellowship at UT Southwestern and section editor of the Bottom Line Summary for the Journal of General Internal Medicine. He has led and serves on numerous committees, including the VA National Quality Scholars Alumni Committee and the Society of General Internal Medicine evidence-based medicine task force. He’s a member of several professional organizations, including the Society of General Internal Medicine, the American Diabetes Association, and the Texas Medical Association. Dr. Bowen’s research focuses on the screening, prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes. He collaborates broadly with clinicians and researchers at UT Southwestern and Parkland Health & Hospital System to develop and evaluate pragmatic, electronic health record-driven solutions to improve clinical processes and health care delivery. He also partners with community organizations to develop processes that improve the health of the local community. He has delivered numerous national and international invited lectures and published scores of academic articles. In 2016, Dr. Bowen was named Outstanding Board Member of the North Texas ADA Community Leadership Board by the American Diabetes Association. Personal Note He has two young children and enjoys spending time with his family, running, cooking, and fishing.
