Biography

Maria Alejandra Bacalao, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and a member of its Rheumatic Diseases division. She specializes in rheumatology.

Dr. Bacalao holds a bachelor's degree in civil and environmental engineering from Rice University in Houston. She then earned a master's degree in environmental engineering from the University of California - Berkley. She received her medical degree from UT Southwestern Medical School, and completed residency training in internal medicine at the University of Chicago and then returned to UT Southwestern for fellowship training in rheumatology.

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, she joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2020.

Dr. Bacalao’s research interests include lupus and other rheumatologic autoimmune diseases.
