Biography Tom Tielleman, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of its Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases. He specializes in therapeutic endoscopy, biliary disorders, and pancreatic cancer prevention. Dr. Tielleman holds a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and molecular biology with honors from Trinity University in San Antonio. He earned his medical degree at UT Southwestern, where he completed internal medicine residency training, and fellowships in gastroenterology and therapeutic endoscopy. He was named Chief Fellow during his gastroenterology fellowship. Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine and gastroenterology, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2021. The immediate impact a number of our procedures I mcan have for patients motivates me to continue to grow as a physician, endoscopist, and educator so that our patients can receive the best possible care imaginable. Dr. Tielleman's research interests align with his clinical interests which focus on multiple forms of therapeutic endoscopy and treat a wide variety of ailments including, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for complex pancreaticobiliary procedures as well as endoscopic ultrasound to assist with cancer diagnoses, minimally invasive drainage of abnormal fluid collections, and management of gastric varices. Dr. Tielleman has undergone additional advanced training in the field of third space endoscopy, which includes peroral endoscopy myotomy (POEM) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). He performs POEM to treat Achalasia, Zenker's diverticulum, and Gastroparesis in a minimally invasive/non-surgical fashion. Dr. Tielleman has also undergone extensive training and proctorship with both American and Japanese masters in ESD, a procedure used to remove tumors from the gastrointestinal tract. ESD was initially developed by the Japanese in the 1990s to remove early gastrointestinal cancers. Over time, the procedure has spread through Europe and now to North America to allow for a minimally invasive way to entirely remove pre-cancerous lesions and early gastrointestinal cancers without the need to surgically remove the underlying organ. Dr. Tielleman's non-clinical focus includes developing simulation and hands-on endoscopy training for the UT Southwestern Gastroenterology fellowship as well as research on therapeutic endoscopy outcomes. Dr. Tielleman is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Personal Note During his free time, Dr. Tielleman enjoys cooking, traveling, and spending time with his family.
