Biography Keri Shafer, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of its Division of Cardiology. She also serves as Chief of Adult Congenital Heart Disease and specializes in managing adult congenital heart disease, focusing on exercise and sports participation; echocardiography; aortopathies including Marfan syndrome; and pregnancy in the setting of congenital heart disease. Dr. Shafer holds a bachelor's degree in animal science from Texas Tech University in Lubbock. She earned her medical degree from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and received internal medicine residency training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston . She completed fellowship training in adult cardiovascular disease at UT Southwestern, in addition to a research fellowship in exercise physiology at its Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine. She then acquired additional fellowship training in adult congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension at Boston Children's Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital. Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in cardiovascular disease and adult congenital heart disease, Dr. Shafer joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2024. Dr. Shafer's research focuses on physiology in adult congenital heart disease, specifically, exercise and sports participation. She has completed research in medical education and her contributions have been published in peer-reviewed journals. In addition, she routinely presents at the American College of Cardiology and other national meetings on adult congenital heart disease and medical education. She is an active member of the Adult Congenital Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, and the American Heart Association.
