Biography Mariam El-Ashmawy, M.D., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of its Division of Hematology and Oncology. She specializes in cutaneous and ocular malignancies, advanced skin cancers, uveal melanoma, and cancer care in patients with solid organ transplants. Dr. El-Ashmawy holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Arizona State University and earned her combined medical and doctoral degrees in cancer biology at UT Southwestern. She completed internal medicine residency training at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where she earned a Certificate of Clinical Investigation, followed by fellowship training in hematology and oncology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Prior to joining the UT Southwestern faculty in 2026, Dr. El-Ashmawy served as an Assistant Professor at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. She is a member of multiple professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, and the Texas Medical Association. Her research centers on tumor biology, therapeutic resistance, and precision oncology, spanning projects on KRAS-amplified gastroesophageal cancers, RAS-pathway inhibitor toxicities, ctDNA monitoring in uveal melanoma, and the impact of tumor microenvironment and immunologic factors on cancer progression. She has contributed to clinical trials as a principal investigator in studies of viral and targeted therapies for melanoma and maintains an early foundation in translational and radiation-biology research, including work on radioprotection, organotypic models, and tumor microenvironmental influences.
