  • Biography

    David Balis, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of the Division of General Internal Medicine. He is the Director of the UT Southwestern Nicotine Cessation Program.

    Originally from New Jersey, Dr. Balis holds a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Dr. Balis earned his medical degree and completed internal medicine residency training at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

    Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Balis joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 1995.

    At UT Southwestern, Dr. Balis is a Colleges Mentor, and Section Chief of General Internal Medicine at Parkland. 

    Dr. Balis is a member of the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association.

    Dr. Balis' research interests include smoking cessation, the effects of smoking on the body, and cessation treatment. He has given numerous lectures nationally. His findings have also resulted in over a dozen peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and a trial for a potential new smartphone app designed to help smoking cessation.

    Personal Note

    Married with two children, Dr. Balis is a competitive triathlete.
