  • Biography

Shai M. Rozen, MD, FACS is Professor and Vice-Chair of Research and Development, and Director of the Microsurgery and Facial Palsy Program in the Department of Plastic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. With over 100 peer-reviewed publications, and more than 200 invited national and international lectures, Dr. Rozen is internationally recognized as a leader in facial reanimation surgery, synkinesis management, reconstructive microsurgery, and facial aesthetic surgery.

Dr. Rozen completed his general surgery training and plastic surgery residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, followed by a craniofacial surgery fellowship and advanced peripheral nerve surgery training. He earned his MD from Tel Aviv University School of Medicine.

His clinical expertise spans the full spectrum of facial paralysis management — from acute facial nerve injury treated with nerve repairs, grafts, and transfers to long-standing paralysis treated with free functional muscle transplantation — as well as surgical treatment of synkinesis including selective neurectomies and myectomies. He performs all aesthetic surgeries of the face including facelift, neck lift, and blepharoplasty, and rhinoplasty . He has trained more than 10 microsurgery fellows and over 100 residents throughout his career.

Dr. Rozen serves as President-Elect of the American Society of Peripheral Nerve Surgery (ASPN) for 2027 and is a member of the Charles Bell Society — an international society for leading facial nerve surgeons. He is Principal Investigator of the landmark DNND (Diabetic Neuropathy Nerve Decompression) Study, the first randomized controlled trial assessing surgical decompression for symptomatic diabetic peripheral neuropathy, funded by the NIH and the David M. Crowley Foundation.

His research programs encompass facial nerve anatomy and regeneration, outcomes in facial reanimation, peripheral nerve bioengineering, synkinesis pathophysiology and treatment. Dr. Rozen has published more than 120 peer reviewed manuscripts and book chapters,  has served as editor of two academic volumes and contributed more than 22 book chapters to major surgical textbooks.
