Biography Dr. Welch’s academic endeavors include publications and lectures centered on the topics of cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery. He is frequently an invited lecturer to his peers in the national and international communities that treat patients with aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, carotid disease, and stroke. As the Director of the UT Southwestern Microvascular Laboratory he instructs residents in approaches to the skull base and microvascular technique. UT Southwestern is benefiting from Dr. Welch’s collaborations with the Utrecht Medical Center in Utrecht, The Netherlands, by making our medical center one of only three sites in the U.S. for the use of a revolutionary laser technique for cerebrovascular bypass, that began in May of 2008. Originally from the Washington, D.C. area, Dr. Welch received educational degrees from Morehouse College and Howard University College of Medicine, where he pursued his interests in the sciences, world literature and Spanish culture. He completed his general neurosurgical training at the George Washington University Medical Center (Washington, D.C.) where he gained significant experience in skull base techniques under the tutelage of Dr Laligam Sekhar. He then completed fellowship training in cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery at UT Southwestern. He continues to contribute as an author to texts on the subject of cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery. Dr. Welch is an active member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, American Heart Association (Stroke Section), and the Society for Neurointerventional Surgery.
