David Morris, Ph.D.

David Morris, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He works primarily with academic mental health research consortiums around the country, providing training in the assessment and diagnosis of psychiatric disorders.

He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Tulsa in 1991 (Tulsa, Oklahoma, Creek Nation), did his clinical internship at the Indian Health Care Resource Center in 2001, and received his doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Tulsa in 2002. Dr. Morris accepted a National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Postdoctoral Fellowship conducting measurement-based care research in depression at UT Southwestern in 2002 and joined the UT Southwestern Medical Center Department of Psychiatry faculty in 2006.

He continues to collaborate on research projects in adults and children and has published over 50 related academic articles. Additionally, Dr. Morris, along with his clinical and research colleagues, developed and share copyrights to 12 established psychiatric assessments (diagnostic and symptom severity), seven in children and adolescents, and five in adults. He was the recipient of a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) New Investigator Award early in his career, and his work has been funded by the NIMH, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

In addition to his collaborative research and clinical training, Dr. Morris continues his work on the Adaptive Affect Approach to understanding and treating anxiety and depression. This theoretical model focuses on the effects of internal and external stressors in the development of affective symptoms and disorders over time.
