Atkins Distinguished Professor of Emergency Medical Services in the Department of Emergency Medicine, where he is Professor of Emergency Medicine, Emergency Medical Services, and Public Health. Dr. Fowler has been involved in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as a medical director, scientist, educator, author, and political advocate for over four decades. He has been an international leader in improving outcomes across the spectrum of prehospital care, including cardiac arrest, trauma, and behavioral emergencies. During his long career in Medicine, his many public responsibilities have included being a founding member and President of the National Association of EMS Physicians (the physician subspecialty organization for EMS Medicine) as well as serving as President of the Georgia College of Emergency Physicians. When EMS Medicine was declared an official "sub-specialty of Medicine" by the American Board of Emergency Medicine in 2010, Dr. Fowler was a member of the task force of EMS Medicine specialists that created and produced the EMS Medicine Subspecialty Review Course to prepare physicians across the nation for the EMS Medicine Board Certification examination. In October 2013 Dr. Fowler became the first physician at UT Southwestern to successfully challenge the EMS Medicine Board Certification examination. In addition to his work in EMS, Dr. Fowler has been a practicing emergency physician for some 47 years, during which time he has also served as an emergency department medical director and manager. Today, he remains one of the most active and respected emergency medicine and EMS physicians of his generation.
