Dr. Slavine is a theoretical physicist. He received his M.S. in theoretical and experimental physics from the Polytechnic University of Tomsk in 1975 and completed his Ph.D. in high energy theoretical physics in 1996 at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna. His thesis topic was the use of quark-gluon string model as an approach for describing multiparticle processes in high energy hadron-nucleus interaction.

After the completion of his M.S. fellowship Dr. Slavine began his independent academic research career by focusing on Monte Carlo studies of Shadows and Channeling effects for charged particles in monocrystals. Dr. Slavine was also involved in cyclotron experiments with semiconductor crystals to study positioning of O-16 and C-12 in crystal lattice.

Dr. Slavine was recruited to the faculty of the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at the JINR as Research Scientist and was quickly promoted to Senior Research Scientist by Highest Scientific Attestation Commission of Russia in 1997. While at JINR his research focus shifted to developing Monte Carlo algorithms and theoretical approaches for  high energy ion-ion collisions. He has also been an active participant of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) International experiments ALICE and CMS in CERN, Geneva during 1989-1999. As a collaborator within these experiments, he took part in work on the ALICE Letter of Intent and Project in general and his results were included in final documents of ALICE experiment. Dr. Slavine headed a small team of investigators who developed particles generator for nucleus-nucleus collisions.

After being invited to join the Department of Radiology at UT Southwestern in 1999, he started his work on a PET/SPECT project. He created and mastered several computer codes for three-dimensional PET image reconstruction for small animal cancer studies, investigated light diffusion in biological tissues by using analytical and Monte Carlo techniques. In 2008 his research focus shifted to PET imaging of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) particularly early diagnosis of beta-amyloid plaques deposition in mice brain. Two of his major areas of research continue to be PET imaging of AD transgenic mice with F-18 labeled quinoline derivatives as highly sensitive tracers for imaging amyloid plaques and developing optimal computational methods for fast processing the acquired PET data to achieve desired technical level for quantitative studies of changes Alzheimer's pathology over time. 

A more recent focus has been molecular imaging, involving the development of novel methods for fast and quantitative image improvement. In this area Dr. Slavine has developed iterative deblurring algorithms with resolution subsets-based modeling approach for quantitative 3D and 2D image recovery (PET/SECT/CT, MRI and Autoradiography). Using this method, a few iterations will be enough to receive a high quality image and enhance reconstruction time savings and thus expensive data processing charges. He is  author and co-author of over 80 scientific peer-reviewed publications.
