Yoshiharu Muto, M.D., Ph.D. Assistant Professor School Medical School Department Internal Medicine Biography Yoshiharu Muto, M.D., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of its Division of Nephrology. Originally from Fukuoka, Japan, Dr. Muto earned his medical degree and doctoral degree in philosophy (medical science) from Kyushu University. He received internal medicine residency training and completed fellowship training in nephrology at Iizuka Hospital. He acquired postdoctoral research training in nephrology at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Muto joined the UT Southwestern Faculty in 2024. Prior to joining UT Southwestern, he served as an Instructor at Washington University. Dr. Muto has been investigating the epigenetic mechanism underlying the kidney diseases, especially focusing on acute kidney injury and its transition to chronic kidney disease, as well as polycystic kidney disease. His focus is on how cellular metabolic deregulation can modulate epigenome in kidney diseases, to identify novel therapeutic targets. He has combined mouse genetics with single cell analysis and other cutting-edge genomic techniques to study kidney diseases. Dr. Muto's interests outside of medical research include spending time with his family, cooking, reading, and the great outdoors.
