Biography

Matthew A. Borgman, M.D. is a Professor of Pediatrics and is the current Director of Education for the Critical Care Division of Children’s Medical Center.  He is a Fellow of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) and a Contributing Scientist for the American Association for Surgery in Trauma (AAST).  He joined UT Southwestern in 2023 after retiring from the US Army reaching the rank of Colonel and serving for over 25 years.

Dr. Borgman graduated from Uniformed Services University (USU) as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 2004.  He completed Pediatric Residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in 2007, followed by a fellowship in Critical Care at Boston Children’s Hospital.  His scholarly activities include over 60 peer-reviewed publications, editor of one textbook, Fundamentals of Critical Care Support: Resource Limited, and over 30 invited podium presentations.  He is an internationally recognized leader in the field of trauma and critical care medicine, having authored the most cited article on combat casualty resuscitation, which helped establish the concept of “1:1” transfusion of red cells and plasma in trauma. In addition, he has published several other ground-breaking papers in pediatric trauma management which have helped redefine the care of children injured during combat operations as well as in peacetime. He is the former national chair of the Pediatric Trauma Society Research Committee and has served as a representative to the National Advisory Committee on Children and Disasters.  He is also well known as an educator, serving as a national consultant for the Pediatric Fundamental Critical Care Course, creating the Fundamentals of Critical Care Resource Limited course, and, as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE), has extensive experience in simulation education.  Dr. Borgman continues his work here at UT Southwestern as an educator and a research mentor.
