Biography

W. James Tom, M.D., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Radiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and a member of its Neuroradiology Division.

Dr. Tom holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (with honors) from the University of Texas at Austin, where he remained to obtain a doctorate in biomedical engineering. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, and completed an internship in general surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital. He obtained radiology residency training at the University of California–San Diego (UCSD), where he served as Chief Resident in the Clinician-Scientist Radiology Residency program. He then remained at UCSD to complete advanced training through a neuroradiology fellowship, and served as Chief Fellow.

He is board certified in diagnostic radiology.

Dr. Tom's research interests have led to numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, and he has presented his findings at major scientific conferences throughout the U.S. and in Canada.

He also holds a U.S. patent for "Methods of Producing Laser Speckle Contrast Images."

Dr. Tom is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Neuroradiology, American College of Radiology, and the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine.
