Biography

Franklin Herlong, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and a member of its Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases. He specializes in gastroenterology.

Originally from Georgia, Dr. Herlong holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He earned his medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He then completed both his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in gastroenterology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in gastroenterology, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2018. Prior to that, he served on the faculty at the University of South Carolina, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

At Johns Hopkins, Dr. Herlong held progressive administrative roles, culminating in more than five years of service as Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and nearly 10 years as Associate Dean of Student Affairs.

Dr. Herlong is a member of the American Liver Foundation and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. He has published numerous academic articles related to his areas of expertise.

He has been listed in Best Doctors in America since 2009.
