Biography

Bhavya R. Shah, M.D., is an Assistant Professor of Radiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and a member of its Neuroradiology Division. He holds a secondary appointment as Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, the Advanced Imaging Research Center, and the Center for Alzheimer's and Neurodegenerative Diseases. He is also the Director of the Transcranial-Focused Ultrasound Lab.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, Dr. Shah earned his medical degree at the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia. He completed his residency training at Boston University Medical Center and then received advanced training through a two-year National Institutes of Health-funded T-32 fellowship program at Stanford University School of Medicine during which time he also completed a biomedical device innovation program. He subsequently completed a fellowship program in neuroradiology at the University of Chicago Medical Center in Chicago.

Dr. Shah’s primary clinical and research interests are the application of transcranial focused ultrasound (FUS) for the treatment of neurologic and psychiatric disease.

Advancing image-guided, incision-less, precision medicine therapies for neurologic and psychiatric diseases. 

Dr. Shah and his team have developed advanced imaging approaches to personalize MR-Guided High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (MRgHIFU) for the treatment of Essential Tremor (ET) & Tremor Dominant Parkinson’s Disease (TDPD). MRgHIFU uses a steerable, ultrasound array to ablate brain tissue under real-time image guidance. This incision-less procedure is FDA approved for ET, TDPD, and Parkinson’s Disease.

Dr. Shah also leads several brain focused ultrasound (FUS) clinical trials for Alzheimer’s Disease and Brain Tumors. Dr. Shah’s pre-clinical lab has developed novel FUS methods to deliver diagnostic and therapeutic agents across the blood brain barrier and studies the role of Low Intensity Focused Ultrasound for neuromodulation.

Dr. Shah is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Radiological Society of North America, the American Society of Neuroradiology, the American Society of Functional Neuroradiology, the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, and the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery.
