Meet Dr. Frederick Sklar
Pediatric Neurosurgeon in Dallas
In his nearly four decades since he started the pediatric neurosurgical program at UT Southwestern Medical Center, pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Frederick Sklar has impacted the lives of thousands of children and their families.
Recognized four times as both a Texas Monthly Super Doctor and a D Magazine Best Pediatric Specialist (Neurosurgery), Dr. Sklar treats patients suffering from a broad range of surgical conditions of the central nervous system.
These include tumors of the brain, spinal cord, skull, and spine (cancerous and benign); hydrocephalus and hydromyelia (water in the brain and spinal cord, respectively); Chiari and craniofacial malformations; tethered spinal cord syndrome; and spinal cord conditions, both congenital and acquired.
He has also helped to separate three sets of conjoined twins.
Dr. Sklar served as the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Children’s Health from 1983 to 2011. He continues to serve on the Children’s faculty and is an attending physician at Parkland Health & Hospital System and a consultant for Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children – all in Dallas.
Certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery, Dr. Sklar is a member of the comprehensive Pediatric Brain Tumor Program team and currently one of only a handful of pediatric neurosurgeons in Dallas.
He believes that a straightforward approach to neurosurgery typically results in the best results for patients.
“The simplest, most direct surgical treatment that promises the highest probability of achieving a desirable outcome is generally the best way to go,” he says. “Simple is better, and it is usually safer.”
Dr. Sklar gets a great deal of satisfaction from the relationships he develops with his patients.
“I love taking care of and interacting with the children,” he says. “They are full of life and energy, trusting and willing to be friends.”
