Meet Dr. Jodi Antonelli
Kidney Stone Specialist

If you’re prone to developing kidney stones, UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Jodi Antonelli, M.D., can help with management and prevention of this painful problem.

Dr. Antonelli specializes in endourology, the medical and surgical management of stone disease. She also focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract obstruction.

She is fellowship trained to handle complicated and recurrent kidney stones using a full range of options. By identifying patients’ risk factors, she works to alter them through dietary changes and, at times, medication.

“Our goal is to stop existing stones from growing larger and prevent new stones from forming,” she says.

Dr. Antonelli also offers a full spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures to remove stones from the kidneys, ureter, and bladder including shock wave lithotripsy, ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy, and percutaneous nephrolithotomy. She also offers endoscopic surgical options for the management and treatment of urinary tract obstruction.

Thanks to Dr. Antonelli’s specialized training, she is able to tackle large stones and stones in complex patients, such as those with kidney anomalies or with challenging anatomy.

In addition to treating kidney stones, she strives to prevent them in the first place in both her clinical practice and through her research.

“I try to determine why patients form stones and work to prevent future ones,” she says. “I also dedicate time to researching the larger questions of why people form stones in an effort to prevent them on a larger scale.”

Dr. Antonelli not only enjoys treating stones that may be an urgent problem but managing a patient’s kidney stone disease so future episodes become less frequent.

“Having kidney stones can be excruciatingly painful and can really affect patients’ lives,” she says. “It’s satisfying to be able to treat them, alleviate peoples’ pain, and hopefully prevent them from recurring.”
