Biography

Maria Alejandra Bacalao, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and a member of the Division of Rheumatic Diseases.

Dr. Bacalao holds a bachelor's degree in civil and environmental engineering from Rice University in Houston. She then earned a master's degree in environmental engineering from the University of California-Berkley. She received her medical degree from UT Southwestern Medical Center and completed residency training in internal medicine at the University of Chicago before returning to UT Southwestern for fellowship training in rheumatology.

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Bacalao joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2020.

Dr. Bacalao’s research interests include lupus and other rheumatologic autoimmune diseases.
