Biography Muhanned Abu-Hijleh, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and a member of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He is the Director of the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Clinic and Program, the Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy, and the Director of Interventional Pulmonology. Originally from Amman, Jordan, Dr. Abu-Hijleh received his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Jordan. He completed internal medicine residency training at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Rhode Island, where he also completed advanced training through a fellowship in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine, and mini-sabbaticals in interventional pulmonology. Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine, and sleep medicine, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2017. Dr. Abu-Hijleh’s research interests include airway disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, lung cancer, and pleural disease. His investigations have frequently resulted in publications in peer-reviewed journals and contributions to book chapters, editorials, and case reports. Additionally, he has presented his findings at scientific conferences throughout the United States and around the world. His clinical interests include sleep and breathing disorders, interventional pulmonology, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures for lung disease, and lung cancer. At UT Southwestern, Dr. Abu-Hijleh teaches medical students and fellows through lectures, pulmonary rotations, and consultations. He serves on the Critical Care Committee and is a past member of many medical and administrative committees. He serves as an associate editor for Lung Journal and is an ad hoc reviewer for that and several other medical journals. Dr. Abu-Hijleh is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, and a member of the American Thoracic Society and the Jordanian Medical Association.
