Biography

Dr. Jeff SoRelle is from Waco and earned his B.S. degree in Chemistry from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky before returning to Texas for medical school at UT Southwestern. First through an AOA summer fellowship and subsequently for a year as a Howard Hughes Research Fellow, Jeff worked in the lab of 2011 Nobel Prize winnerDr. Bruce Beutler, screening mutagenized mice for genetic regulators of the allergic IgE antibody response.

Upon graduating medical school, Dr. SoRelle completed a residency in Clinical Pathology and fellowship in Molecular Genetic Pathology at UT Southwestern. Dr. SoRelle served as Chief Resident and won the Weinberg Resident Research award in 2020 upon graduating Clinical Pathology (CP only) residency. As an assistant professor, Dr. SoRelle has opened a  basic science research lab with support from the Disease Oriented Clinical Scholars (DOCS) program. He bridges his clinical and research training as Associate Director of the Next Generation Sequencing Lab within the Once Upon A Time Human Genomics Center. There, he has developed several advanced COVID-19 molecular assays and co-leads the UTSW effort to monitor COVID-19 Variants of Concern, which he writes about as a regular contributor of LABLOGATORY, a blog for Laboratory Medicine Professionals.

He is continues investigation of the genetics of allergy, as he opens a new lab. My lab aims to discover the reasons people get allergies at a genetic level. Then we can translate these findings into diagnostic and therapeutic solutions for patients with allergy. With aggressive enthusiasm, we will follow the data to achieve our aims with teamwork as a guiding principle. We will advance the careers of lab members by developing excellent scientific thinking, and clear written and verbal communication.
